Siskiyou Chapter Report

SISKIYOU CHAPTER REPORT
November 1, 2011

Since last year’s CWIT Annual Meeting of October 2010, Siskiyou Chapter has again been actively involved in a number of community events.:

Our fund-raising and educational efforts have been implemented throughout the year by providing a bar service. At these fundraisers we have the opportunity to inform the public of WIT’s tenets.

This year Siskiyou’s “Bar Wench Gigs” have involved open bars for: fundraisers for two community individuals with major health issues, Siskiyou County Cattlewomen, Siskiyou County Cattlemen, Yreka Fire Department, Yreka High School “Miner Power”, Grenada Sports’ Foundation, Siskiyou County Water-Users’ Association (SCWUA)*, Siskiyou County Farm Bureau, Rocky Mountain Elks Foundation and “Red Hat Society” Regional Convention held in Yreka.

Our fund-raisers have allowed us to contribute to a number of activities:

  • Scholarships to five Siskiyou County graduating high school seniors who are, or will be, involved in the timber and/or natural resources industries.
  • Donated a wooden rocker-glider to the birthing room at Fairchild Medical Center (A metal plaque affixedto the chair denotes Siskiyou Women in Timber as the donor).
  • Provided lunches for those volunteering their time to present/educate at the Jackson Street School 7th/8th grade Science Field Day. These were held in June at Greenhorn Park. Marie Kennedy from “Talk About Trees” was one of the presenters.
  • National Forest Project Week (October): We decorated the storefront window at the Yreka Chamber of Commerce and will distribute forestry books to various Elementary Schools’ libraries.
  • Continued the up-keep of a lovely rose garden at the Siskiyou County Fairgrounds.
  • Paid the expenses to send six of our chapter members to the National FWIT meeting in Clackamass, Oregon October 7th and 8th.
  • Assisted E. Clampus Vitus Organization with registration at their annual fishing derby for the youth of the area. We also donated five fishing rods and reels to E.C.V.
  • Contributed financially to the following organizations through donations or by successfully bidding on auction items at their fund-raising events: Siskiyou County Ag Day, Yreka Fire Department, Miner Power, Grenada Sports’ Foundation, Siskiyou County Farm Bureau, Rocky Mountain Elks and SCWUA.

Our election of officers and announcement of our Chapter’s “Woman of the Year” will take place at our next meeting which will be held after the deadline for this report. We will, however, have this information for you at the Annual Meeting October 21-22. Siskiyou Chapter is looking forward to another year of promoting W.I.T. and its aims and objectives.

** (SCWUA) The guest speaker at this event was CA Assemblyman Jim Nielsen. He spoke on the need to oppose the dam removals along the Klamath River and the impact this would have on Siskiyou County’s 30% unemployment rate.

Respectfully submitted,
Joyce K. Weston
Chapter Co-Rep
